Emotional well-being involves the recognition and acceptance of all of our thoughts and feelings whether positive or negative and being able to adapt in stressful situations/times of adversity. This awareness and acceptance of our emotions is necessary in cultivating balance and resiliency and supports us in developing and nurturing relationships and friendships.
Setting time aside from friends and family is not selfish. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Jesus himself withdrew from the crowd during his ministry to spend time alone with God. Here are 6 ways you can make the most of your time alone to nurture your emotional well-being.
Take time to quiet your mind and reflect - Journaling is a great way to do this. You can write your thoughts all in one book and get in touch with how you're feeling about the various things that are going on in your life.
The best way to do this is to be still in the presence of the Lord and ask Him to send his peace. Play worship instrumentals, pray, read the word, sit and be still and lay all your burdens on him. This is the best way to rejuvenate.
Laugh! Sometimes humor is the best medicine! Find a good movie, sitcom or cartoon, go out with some friends and have a good laugh. It's good for the soul.
Take care of your body - Eat well, exercise, and sleep – your emotional & physical health are interconnected.
Share your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust - Sometimes its better to just let this out instead of keeping them in. Find someone, whether it be a friend, family member, mentor or pastor, to sit and discuss things with. You don't always have to leave with a solution, sometimes you just want to be heard. You can also leave room to hear from the other person as well if they'd like to share.
Take time in nature - Take a trip to enjoy the beauty, silence and fresh air of nature! Go for a walk, run, bike ride, hike or visit a natural wonder and enjoy peace.
