Oftentimes, on the journey of life, our most important asset is often the one we neglect the most, the one we overlook, the one we often forget to feed, care for, and nurture—our mental health.
In this sin-sick, complex, and ever-evolving world, understanding and safeguarding our mental health is not a luxury but an absolute necessity. It’s important for us to see and understand that our mental health is a rock upon which our dreams are built, a big part of the foundation on which our relationships flourish, and a layer of the soil on which our sense of self takes root. Yet, in the hustle and bustle of our daily walk, endless responsibilities, deadlines, careers, and ambitions, we often find ourselves overlooking this essential facet of our lives.
Mental Health Defined
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is a “state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Mental health then, is not merely the absence of mental illness, but the stability of our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It's how we view life, how we feel and think and behave.
The importance of taking care of our Mental Health
Though we are generally more focused on keeping our physical body healthy taking care of our mental health is crucial for our overall well-being and quality of life. When our minds are unstable, they affect the entire functioning of our bodies. Equally, a stable mind is crucial to stabilizing our behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. Focusing on mental health care can increase productivity, enhance our self-image, and improve relationships.
Good mental health is essential for optimal productivity and how we function in our daily lives. When we prioritize our mental health, we can concentrate better, make better decisions, and perform more effectively at work and in our personal lives. It enables us to experience and manage a wide range of emotions, happiness, sadness, anger, and contentment by helping us to navigate these emotions in a healthy way.
Life is full of challenges, and good mental health equips us with the resilience and coping mechanisms needed to face these challenges. It helps us to balance our lives and bounce back from setbacks along our journey.
Safeguarding our mental health is not a luxury but a necessity!!!
