The Shepherd Needs Shepherding Too.

Embracing the role of a shepherd within a spiritual framework is truly an important vocation. Spiritual leaders devote themselves to the sacred task of guiding, nurturing, and safeguarding their community. But who truly cares for the shepherd? Leaders frequently invest so much of their energy into others that they overlook the importance of nurturing their own spiritual, emotional, and physical health. Divine teachings remind us that even those who guide others require nurturing, encouragement, and moments of respite.

As pastors and leaders nurture their congregations, they too find solace and guidance under the watchful eye of the ultimate Shepherd—God Himself. Psalm 23 serves as a profound reminder of the divine guidance that envelops us all, including those who guide others: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” He guides me to rest in lush, serene meadows. He guides me to tranquil waters. “He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:1-3). God offers guidance, restoration, and provision to those in leadership, ensuring they receive the rest and nurturing essential for their roles.

Leaders also need support from their congregation. Galatians 6:6 encourages mutual care: “Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.” This verse highlights the importance of supporting those who lead spiritually, reminding the flock to give back through encouragement, prayer, and practical assistance.

Even Jesus exemplified the significance of rest for those in positions of leadership. In Mark 6:31, following a time of intensive ministry, He invited His disciples: “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” Just as Jesus invited His disciples to find rest, those in spiritual leadership today must also carve out moments for retreat, reflection, and rejuvenation to carry on their important work with renewed vigour.

In the early church, leaders supported each other. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, Paul writes: “We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.” This highlights the importance of respect and love between fellow leaders, offering each other accountability, wisdom, and mutual encouragement.

The scriptures invite the whole community to lift their voices in prayer for those who guide them. Hebrews 13:17 highlights the vital role of leaders and the importance of their care: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.” Encourage them to embrace this task with joy rather than with reluctance, as doing so would not serve you well. Seeking joy and strength in leadership is a vital practice for nurturing those entrusted with the guidance of others.

Spiritual leaders carry immense responsibility. While they tend to their flock, it’s crucial to remember that they, too, need care. God, fellow leaders, and the church community all play a role in supporting the shepherd. Pastors and leaders should also seek regular rest and time with God to renew their strength. As a church, let’s be mindful of who cares for the shepherd, lifting them up in prayer and supporting them in tangible ways.

This is so true. It's often said, 'you can't pour from an empty vessel', and so shepherds need restoration to be able to care for the flock. 1 Timothy 2 :1-2 exhorts us to pray for leaders that we will have a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

Often overlooked by many is the concept of REST but even more than this is the care for those in leadership. This was a joy to read! ¡Gracias!
