Understanding the Whole Armor of God

Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual wickedness in heavenly places. -Ephesians 6: 11-12 NKJV

As it was in the days of the Roman empire, Roman soldiers going to war was a crucial part of bringing home victory and an unprepared soldier meant risking becoming captive to the enemy or even worse, death. As we walk daily with the Lord it is no hidden truth that spiritual warfare is a major part of our journey, and the apostle Paul encourages us to put on our means of defense to push back against the attacks of the enemy. The whole armor of God.

In light of the natural attire of the Roman soldiers heading into battle, in Ephesians 6:14-17 Paul references principles laid down by Roman soldiers and explains our clothing when entering wars against the enemy and to live a life that is set apart in the sight of the Lord. Each part of the armor of God carries a specific function but all work together to ensure that we are not lopsided warriors.

Gird your waist with truth- For all your other armors to work effectively it must be connected to a girdle of truth. To be girded with truth means that you have to develop a relationship with Christ because according to John 14: 6 He is the way, the truth and the life.

The first foundation and armor is Jesus and He has to be central for your armor to be properly fitted much less used.

Put on the breastplate of righteousness- In war the breastplate is an offence mechanism used to reflect the radiant beams from the sun to the eyes of the enemy.

According to 2 Corinthians 5:21 we are the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus so when we put on the breastplate of righteousness it is the testimony that Jesus Christ is our righteousness that allows us to reflect the glory and righteousness of God even to our enemies.

Shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace- The effects of your walk must be where you have been. Paul was saying that we need to be armed with the gospel of peace so that wherever we walk we must leave the kingdom of God. The anointing and the presence of the Lord must remain even after we have left.

Take the shield faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one- The shield of the Roman soldier was made with animal hide (skin), it was layered to make it as iron and then soaked in water so that it would be able to quench the fiery darts of their enemies when in war. In order for you to effectively exercise faith where you can quench the darts of the enemy your shield has to be soaked in the word of God. The soldier had to take time to prepare their shield so too you have to take time to prepare your faith and treat it with the water of the word.

Take the helmet of salvation- The mind is where the battle is, therefore, the helmet of salvation is protection. A mind that’s not fortified by Christ is fertile soil for infestation and as such Paul encourages us in Romans 12:1-2 to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God which is our reasonable service and be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our mind. When you have the mind of Christ, and you put on the helmet of salvation there’s no attack of the enemy that you will not overcome.

Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God- A believer without the word of God is like a house without electricity or a phone without much charge; it is impossible to function at full capacity. Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piecing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joint and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intent of the heart. We must desire the sincere milk of the word and live it by divine revelation through the Holy Spirit. A man who knows the scriptures but lack revelation will use his sword to damage himself and those he is fighting with.

The moment we said yes to Jesus we said yes to being a battle ax in the hands of God so it is essential that we gear up for battle by putting on the whole armor because the enemy is not going to be nice just because we may not be prepared and there’s no escaping.
